Bangladesh sentences ex-PM Sheikh Hasina to death

Former Bangladesh Leader Receives Death Penalty

A special tribunal in Bangladesh's capital has delivered a landmark verdict, sentencing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity. The ruling comes following her government's violent crackdown on student-led protests last year that resulted in hundreds of fatalities.

Details of the Tribunal's Ruling

The Dhaka tribunal found Sheikh Hasina guilty of authorising excessive force against demonstrators during the widespread uprising that ultimately ended her 15-year tenure as the country's leader. Alongside the former prime minister, ex-home minister Asaduzzaman Khan also received the death penalty for his direct involvement in coordinating the lethal response to protesters.

Both Hasina and Khan, who had previously fled to neighbouring India following the collapse of their government, were tried and convicted in absentia. The court proceedings revealed that the security forces' actions during the student-led uprising caused hundreds of civilian deaths, constituting crimes against humanity under international law.

Third Defendant Turns State Witness

In a significant development during the trial, a former police chief chose to cooperate with prosecutors, providing testimony against his former colleagues. After pleading guilty to his role in the events, he received a reduced sentence of five years imprisonment for becoming a state witness.

The special tribunal emphasised that the severity of the sentences reflected the gravity of the offences committed during the suppression of the protests. The crackdown not only resulted in substantial loss of life but also triggered the political upheaval that removed Sheikh Hasina from power after nearly a decade and a half in office.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation, particularly regarding whether Bangladesh will seek extradition of the convicted former leaders from India to carry out the sentences. The verdict represents one of the most significant legal actions against a former head of government in Bangladesh's recent history.
