Askew Road, nestled in Shepherd's Bush, West London, has undergone a remarkable transformation from a once 'scuzzy' area to a charming village-like neighbourhood. Residents now enjoy a strong sense of community, independent shops, and excellent transport links to Central London.
From Gaggle Goose Green to Askew Village
Historically known as Gaggle Goose Green, the area now boasts a bustling high street filled with independent traders, cafés, and restaurants. Long-time residents recall a period when the neighbourhood had a rougher edge, but today it is a little-known gem.
Sonya, a resident of Askew Road, said: "The area is great; it's got a nice community, it is very green, the houses are lovely. Some of us are lucky to have gardens. But this area used to be quite scuzzy. Now, it's got interesting shops and cafés. The traffic is still bad, but generally speaking, I think it's a lot better."
Independent Shops and Community Spirit
The area is renowned for its diverse range of amenities, including patisseries, butchers, bookshops, and specialist boutiques. Thomas Salihi, who has lived in the area his entire life, noted: "I think Shepherd's Bush as a whole has definitely become gentrified over the years. Askew Road is a perfect example of that. There are more privately owned businesses now, which I think is always a good thing. The community is lovely and everyone is very friendly."
Nithin Francs, an employee at local supermarket Parkway Greens, praised the neighbourhood's welcoming spirit: "The community is really like a big family - everyone is very settled here. And the customers we get are always so friendly!"
Victorian Architecture and Green Spaces
Victorian buildings and grand mansion blocks line Askew Road, with many converted into flats, though original properties and Georgian villas remain. For open spaces, residents can easily access Acton Park, Wendell Park, and Ravenscourt Park, ideal for walks, picnics, or outdoor activities.
The area is also a haven for dog owners. Most cafés offer treats for four-legged visitors. Rishi Pabary, out walking his dog, commented: "Lots of places give treats to dogs everywhere. We've been out with her today and she's had treats from about eight different places. Everywhere we go, she pulls us into shops now just to get treats. It's very friendly here."
Local Businesses Support Each Other
Lisa Corrigan, manager of Detour, a local brunch café, confirmed that dogs are welcome: "We've got dog treats on the table over there. All the fluffy little friends come to say hello." She added: "The community loves the business, and we have lots of regulars who come for coffee every single day. The brunch menu is really popular. All the businesses on the street support one another, which makes it a lovely community to work in."
Excellent Transport Links
Askew Road benefits from superb transport links, with Hammersmith, Goldhawk Road, Stamford Brook, and Ravenscourt Park stations providing rapid access to Central London.
Residents Put Down Roots
Sisters Dannie and Carrie set up their hairdressing and beauty salon on the road. Carrie McInerney said: "Askew has changed a lot, which is good. It used to be quite run down, but they call it Askew Village now! Everywhere in London is coming up at the moment." She highlighted the neighbourhood's strong word-of-mouth culture: "Our main clientele are mums at the schools - everyone talks about us. Today, we had a mum who was recommended through her mummy's WhatsApp group. I love the community here!"
With its blend of period properties, independent retailers, and green open spaces, Askew Road offers the perfect marriage of urban convenience and village charm.
