Denise Fox (Diane Parish) is keeping a devastating secret from her family in EastEnders. Diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), an aggressive blood cancer, she refuses treatment to support her daughter Chelsea after Jordan's accident.
Denise's heartbreaking decision
Almost all of Denise’s family are unaware of how ill she is. She plans to keep it that way at any cost. The beloved Queen Vic regular has had her world turned upside down following her diagnosis. The timing could not be worse. The Fox clan are rallying around Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams) after her young son Jordan was terribly injured by Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) in an accidental hit-and-run.
For that reason, Denise made the heartbreaking choice to keep her diagnosis secret to avoid worrying her family. Only two close confidantes know the truth: her dear friend Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) and Jack Branning (Scott Maslen).
Doctors' orders ignored
In a recent episode, doctors told a shocked Denise she must be admitted immediately for a week of intense chemotherapy, followed by three weeks in hospital to prevent infections. However, Denise was determined to support Chelsea, especially given the worrying development that Jordan may never fully recover from his injuries. She completely refused to start treatment, despite Jack’s desperate pleas. Jack broke down in tears as he begged Denise to change her mind. But she ignored both Jack and the doctors, choosing to support her family even in her increasingly weakened state.
Jack turns to Phil
Jack and Denise have had a tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship from 2019 to the present, filled with heartache, infidelity and passion. Though not married or together anymore, Jack still cares deeply for Denise. That is why he confides in the one person on the Square who might understand – Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).
Phil himself has a complicated history with Denise, spanning decades of Walford drama, marked by clashes, family ties, and a shared child. Phil might not be Jack’s biggest fan, but the two old rivals are drawn together by their mutual ties. They both care about Denise. Upcoming scenes will see Jack bare his soul to Phil and confess Denise’s diagnosis, with explosive consequences.
Phil confronts Denise
Denise ignores repeated calls from Walford General, determined to start treatment on her own terms. Meanwhile, Jack confides in Phil, and together they consider how to get through to her. As the Fox-Truemans rally to support Chelsea and Jordan, Denise notices Kim’s (Tameka Empson) ring, prompting her to reveal Kim and Howie’s engagement. The family agrees to celebrate later in The Vic, though Chelsea notices Denise is distracted.
Later, Denise is stunned when Phil turns up knowing all about her diagnosis. Despite his concerns, she throws him out. Can anyone get through to Denise before it is too late?
