Decades-Old Cold Case Sees Dramatic Arrest

In a significant breakthrough, South Wales Police have arrested an 86-year-old man in connection with the unsolved murders of a couple on their farm more than three decades ago. The arrest on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, marks a pivotal moment in one of Wales's most enduring cold case investigations.

The Tragic Discovery in Llanharry

The bodies of Harry Tooze, 64, and his wife Megan Tooze, 67, were discovered with gunshot wounds in a cowshed at their Ty Ar y Waun farm in Llanharry, near Cardiff, on 26 July 1993. The couple had last been seen alive that morning when they left home to collect their pensions.

Neighbours later reported hearing two gunshots at around 1.30pm, but the sounds were not initially reported to emergency services as they were considered a normal occurrence in a rural setting. Police were only alerted after the couple's daughter grew concerned when a regular phone call went unanswered.

Forensic Review Reopens Investigation

In 2023, detectives initiated a forensic review of the case, utilising modern technological advances not available at the time of the murders. This review aimed to uncover new evidence and has now led to this week's arrest. The suspect remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Superintendent Mark Lewis stated: "While this arrest is clearly a significant development in the investigation, our inquiries are very much ongoing. This case has affected many people over the years, and our aim is to find the answers to the unanswered questions which remain about their deaths over 30 years on."

Appeal for Information Continues

Despite the passage of time, police are continuing to appeal for information. Detective Superintendent Lewis added: "Even with this passage of time, I appeal to anyone who has any information about the murders to come forward and speak to police." The force hopes that the arrest may prompt new witnesses or details to emerge from the community.

The investigation into the Llanharry farm murders demonstrates the persistent commitment of South Wales Police to solving historic crimes, offering a renewed hope for justice for Harry and Megan Tooze.
