Metropolitan Police Issues Warning Over Planned Protest with Criminal Offending Likely
The Metropolitan Police has declared that a protest scheduled for Saturday, April 11, is anticipated to involve criminal offending rather than constitute a lawful demonstration. The event, organized by Defend Our Juries, is expected to draw large crowds aiming to show support for Palestine Action, a group proscribed under the Terrorism Act.
Previous Arrests and Legal Framework
In September of last year, authorities detained over 890 individuals for expressing support for Palestine Action, which remains banned under the Terrorism Act. This historical context underscores the seriousness with which law enforcement approaches such gatherings, highlighting the legal ramifications for participants.
Commander Claire Smart, who is overseeing policing operations in London this weekend, emphasized the unique challenges posed by this event. She stated, "We are preparing for another busy weekend where we anticipate policing a large-scale event that is expected to involve criminal offences."
Police Preparedness and Public Warning
While the Metropolitan Police routinely manages peaceful and lawful protests without necessitating arrests, Commander Smart noted that this event presents distinct considerations. She cautioned attendees, "Those attending should be aware that showing support for a proscribed organisation is an offence under the Terrorism Act, and we will not hesitate to act where the law is broken."
Reflecting on past incidents, Commander Smart added, "At previous events linked to this group we have seen coordinated attempts to disrupt police activity, including obstructing officers and, at times, verbal or physical abuse." She assured that officers are trained to handle such situations proportionately and effectively, with robust plans and resources in place to respond appropriately, including making arrests when necessary.
Consequences and Officer Dedication
Commander Smart strongly advised potential attendees to consider the potential consequences, noting that an arrest and criminal record can have serious and lasting effects on individuals' lives. She expressed gratitude for the officers and staff working across London this weekend, acknowledging the sustained pressure from repeated public order events and their dedication to delivering vital policing services.
This warning comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing scrutiny of protest activities in the capital, with law enforcement prioritizing public safety and legal compliance in the face of anticipated disruptions.
