Tragic Death in Derbyshire Floodwater After Police Pursuit
A suspect has tragically died after plunging into icy floodwater during a police chase of a stolen caravan in Derbyshire. The body was recovered from Egginton Brook following an extensive search operation involving multiple emergency services.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The pursuit began when police responded to reports of a caravan stolen from Oakerthorpe. During the chase, the driver of the vehicle reportedly rammed police cars before coming to a stop near the village of Egginton. According to police statements, both occupants fled the vehicle immediately after stopping.
While one suspect was apprehended shortly afterward, the second man entered the flooded Egginton Brook near the junction of Main Street and Ash Grove Lane. Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service joined police in searching the area for several hours before recovering the man from the water.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Ambulance crews provided immediate treatment at the scene before transporting the man to Royal Derby Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Formal identification has not yet been completed, and authorities are working to notify the deceased's next of kin.
Because the death occurred following police contact, Derbyshire Constabulary has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). This standard procedure ensures independent oversight of incidents involving police actions.
