The Metropolitan Police have charged a man with murder following the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old man in Newham last week. Sergiu Leahu, 40, of no fixed address, was charged this morning (Monday, August 24) with the killing of Masum Miah. Leahu is due to appear before Bromley Magistrates’ Court later today.
Shooting in East Ham
Police were called to St Bartholomew's Road in East Ham at approximately 3am on Tuesday, August 18, following reports of a shooting. Officers and ambulance paramedics arrived at the scene to find Mr Miah suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards.
Mr Miah's family are being supported by specialist officers, according to the Met Police.
Investigation and appeal
Detective Chief Inspector Dan Whitten, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts remain with Masum’s family as they come to terms with his tragic death. We are continuing to appeal to anyone with information that could assist our enquiries to come forward.”
Whitten specifically appealed for witnesses who saw a black Nissan Duke in the vicinity of St Bartholomew's Road between the evening of Monday, August 17, and the early hours of Tuesday, August 18. He urged anyone in the area at the time of the shooting, or anyone with dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage, to contact police.
