Five teenagers remain in police custody following a devastating house fire in southeast London that claimed one life, with authorities treating the blaze as suspected arson.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that four boys and one girl were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after emergency services were called to a residential property in Plumstead during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Tragic Discovery Amid the Flames
Fire crews from the London Fire Brigade battled the intense blaze for hours after receiving multiple emergency calls around 2:30 AM. Despite their efforts, one person was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been formally released, pending notification of next of kin and formal identification procedures.
Police Investigation Intensifies
Detective Chief Inspector James Templeton, leading the investigation, stated: "This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of life, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time."
He confirmed that all five suspects, whose ages haven't been disclosed but are believed to be teenagers, remain in custody while officers continue their enquiries.
