Residents of Clapham North are reeling after what they describe as a shooting outside a local pub, an incident that has shattered the peace of their usually quiet neighborhood. Police forensic teams have descended on the junction of Willington Road and Landor Road, where large yellow tents now mark the scene of the alleged gunfire.
Loud bangs and a fleeing man
One anonymous local told MyLondon that they heard two loud bangs and saw a man running from the scene. "I was walking up Landor Road to the shop, I heard two loud bangs coming from Willington Road, the couple in front of me looked a bit startled, and he held her back, I thought 'it's fine, you hear stuff in London all the time'. I walked around them in the road I looked up Willington Road and there's a man running away and he's shouted something twice, but I don't know what."
The witness described seeing the victim lying on the ground, adding, "I didn't see the gunfire, but I was right next to it. It's a nice area with nice people; there are a few dodgy people around sometimes, but I've never seen something like this happen before. This kind of thing happens in London quite a bit, but to be this close shakes you up quite a bit."
Community leaders speak out
Pastor Lorraine Jones-Burrell, speaking to MyLondon at the scene, expressed the community's shock: "The scenes of body tents, blood and forensic evidence in our communities are horrifying and deeply traumatising. In our inner-city communities, where residents and families live so closely together, the impact of such violence reaches far beyond the immediate crime scene."
She highlighted the effect on children, noting, "It is the school summer holidays, and many children who have not travelled away will be waking up and looking out of their windows to this horrific scene. No child should have to witness this. It is heartbreaking."
Growing fears for safety
Another resident, who asked to remain unnamed, spoke of increased anxiety, especially at night. "Normally, during the day it's quite nice, you have Clapham Common, and Brixton Hill. But during the evening times, especially for a woman, you don't feel safe," they said. They recounted a recent incident where they had to run to a couple for help after being followed home.
The Metropolitan Police have yet to officially confirm the shooting or provide details on arrests or injuries. Officers have been visiting nearby homes to collect ring doorbell footage as part of the investigation. A cordon remains in place around a residential building near the pub.
This incident has sparked fears that violence could be escalating in the area, with residents calling for action. As one local put it, "No one is safe at the other end of a gun. This violence has to stop." The community is left to process the trauma, with many hoping that this will be a wake-up call for authorities to address the root causes of such incidents.
