Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was absent from the team's first full-squad training camp workout on Wednesday as he stays with his family following the shooting of his wife, allegedly by their son, at their Virginia home last weekend.
Wife Out of ICU, Making Progress
Chiefs coach Andy Reid reported after the workout that Mia Bieniemy had been released from the intensive care unit, where she was being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. Reid stated, "She's making progress, so we're happy about that." However, no timeline has been set for Eric Bieniemy's return to the team.
Son Arrested and Charged
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Eric and Mia, was arrested in connection with the late-Sunday shooting. He faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. Elijah has a court date for motions on Thursday, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 31.
Bieniemy's Career and Absence Impact
Eric Bieniemy returned to the Chiefs this year after previous stints with the Washington Commanders, UCLA, and the Chicago Bears. His absence during training camp is significant as he must catch up on changes to Reid's playbook. Pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier and offensive line coach Andy Heck have taken over many of his duties.
