The body of Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old college freshman from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was discovered on Horn Island on Monday, ending a two-day search that had drawn national attention. Wells had been reported missing after he failed to return from a boat trip with friends on 4 July.
Discovery and identification
Wells's mother, Christine Wonsley, identified the body on Tuesday. In a Facebook post, she wrote: "His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated. My heart is broken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son." No cause of death has been reported, and the investigation is ongoing. Wells, a student at Southwest Mississippi Community College, would have turned 19 next month.
Social media speculation and civil rights response
During the search, Wonsley posted photos of Wells and the group from the boat trip on Facebook. Social media users noted that Wells was Black while the other three men in the photos were white, leading to speculation about a possible racial incident. National civil rights organizations have commented on the case. The NAACP wrote on Instagram: "His name was Nolan Xavier Wells. He was 18. He was loved. He deserved more time. Our hearts are with Nolan's family, friends, and community as they navigate this devastating loss. Every Black man deserves the chance to grow old."
Ongoing investigation
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter stated on Tuesday that the case remains "still a very active investigation." Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances of Wells's disappearance or death.
