Animal rights activists stormed a luxury serviced apartment building in Mayfair on Sunday evening, leading to a physical altercation with security personnel. The protest group International Council for Animal Welfare posted a three-minute video of the incident on Monday, showing activists rushing up the stairs of the 47 Park Street complex, which is operated by Marriott. The protesters used a megaphone to chant slogans and filmed the scene on their phones as a loud alarm blared in the background.
Security confronts protesters
In the video, a security guard in a suit is seen knocking phones out of activists' hands and pushing them toward the building's exit. One protester called the guard a 'piece of s**t', a 'thug', and a 'violent scumbag'. A resident, apparently angered by the disturbance, shouted at a demonstrator for waking his son. Later, the same resident stood silently while another activist yelled in his ear.
Demand for cage-free pledge
The group's social media post, under the handle Jes Doing Activism, stated that the protest targeted Marriott's failure to fulfill its cage-free commitments. 'The protests will stop when you make good on your cage free pledges,' they wrote. The campaign urges Marriott to eliminate the use of eggs from caged hens in its supply chain.
Marriott responds
A Marriott spokesperson confirmed the incident: 'At 9.38pm, a group of animal rights protesters stormed into the 47 Park Street residences, using loudspeakers, blaring sirens, and causing major disruptions to members, guests, and associates at the property. Contracted security personnel responded immediately and removed all protesters from the building by 9.50pm.'
The 47 Park Street complex, located near Oxford Street and Hyde Park, offers luxury vacation rentals with nightly rates reaching £1,450. Its website describes the property as 'housed within an Edwardian-style London townhouse' providing access to landmarks like Hyde Park, Marble Arch, Oxford Street, and the West End.
