Family of Former Zutons Guitarist Condemns Police Handling of Racist Attack Probe
The family of Boyan Chowdhury, a founding member of the indie band The Zutons, has publicly criticized Merseyside Police over what they describe as "multiple failings" in the investigation into a violent racist attack that left him with a severe head wound. The incident occurred near his home in Wavertree, Liverpool, on a Saturday afternoon, where Chowdhury was struck with what is believed to be a piece of wood, resulting in blood pouring down his face and symptoms of concussion.
Details of the Assault and Immediate Aftermath
Chowdhury, who lives with his wife and five-year-old son, shared graphic images of his injury on social media, stating he could have been killed in the attack. His family reports that he continues to recover at home but has expressed a lack of faith in how the case is being managed. They allege that police provided insufficient support and communication, with no official notification of arrests until Thursday evening, despite two 17-year-old males being apprehended earlier in the week.
Police Response and Arrests
Merseyside Police confirmed that a 17-year-old from Mossley Hill was arrested on Monday on suspicion of racially aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm and released on conditional bail. A second 17-year-old from Liverpool was arrested on Thursday for similar charges, including possession with intent to supply nitrous oxide. Detective Superintendent Cath Cummings emphasized that hate crime has no place in the community and assured that extensive CCTV analysis and witness interviews are ongoing to identify all suspects.
Family's Criticisms and Demands
In a statement, Chowdhury's family highlighted several concerns:
- Poor communication: They were not promptly informed of arrests, adding to their trauma.
- Lack of urgency: Police initially indicated an update within 14 days, which they argue downplays the severity of the incident.
- Inadequate action: No immediate search for the weapon or visible police presence in the area post-attack, potentially allowing perpetrators to return without consequence.
The family is calling for answers, accountability, and reassurance that the investigation is being treated with the seriousness it warrants.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
Police have stated that a search for the weapon was conducted and continues, alongside efforts to reassure residents. However, the family believes the lack of immediate action has undermined safety in the neighbourhood. This case underscores broader issues in hate crime response, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward to ensure justice is served.
