Darnell Smith, a 27-year-old prisoner who escaped from an open prison in January, is still on the run six months later, prompting renewed appeals from Thames Valley Police. Smith escaped from HMP Springhill near Grendon Underwood at around 11:30am on Wednesday, January 28, and has not been recaptured as of July 28, 2026.
Background and links
Smith was serving a sentence for possession with intent to supply a class A controlled drug and exploitation. He has known links to Croydon, Plumstead, Surrey, and Sussex, and is considered unlawfully at large after leaving the prison without authority or a lawful licence.
Police appeal
Investigating officer Police Staff Investigator Evelina Kersyte, of the Prison Crime Team, said: “We are appealing for the help of the public to trace Darnell Smith, who is unlawfully at large after escaping from HMP Springhill. If you see Smith, do not approach him and call 999 instead.”
Smith is described as approximately 5ft 8ins tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing all black clothing with his hair tied into bunches.
