A 16-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly stabbing a 17-year-old student at the Islamic College of Brisbane in Karawatha, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Queensland police.
Altercation leads to stabbing
Police allege that during an altercation between the two teenagers, the 16-year-old used a small knife to stab the older boy. The two individuals are known to each other, a police spokesperson confirmed. After the stabbing, the alleged perpetrator fled the scene on foot but was located a short time later in a vehicle on Gowan Road, Stretton.
The 16-year-old has been charged with one count of committing an act intended to maim, disfigure or disable and one count of unlawful possession of weapons category M. He is scheduled to appear before Richlands Children’s Court on Wednesday.
Victim in stable condition
The 17-year-old victim was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital, where he was initially described as having life-threatening injuries. However, a hospital spokesperson stated on Tuesday afternoon that the boy is now in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.
School lockdown and response
A spokesperson for the Islamic College of Brisbane said the school implemented a short lockdown after calling emergency services. “After the situation was contained, students and staff were sent home,” the spokesperson said. “The school is working with authorities, and counselling and support services are available for all school community members should they require it. The college will continue to communicate any developments to students and their families, who are urged to avoid any premature and irresponsible speculation around the incident.”
Second school stabbing in Queensland this week
This incident marks the second school stabbing in Queensland within the same week. On Monday, a 15-year-old boy from Kanimbla in far-north Queensland was charged after allegedly stabbing another boy at a school in Cairns. The 15-year-old was charged with one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm. He was refused bail on Monday and was due to appear in Cairns Children’s Court on Tuesday.
