Six killed in shooting at youth welfare facility in Stade

Five women and a man were killed in a shooting at a youth welfare facility in Stade, northern Germany, on Monday afternoon. Police confirmed that all victims were shot inside the building, with five pronounced dead at the scene and a sixth later dying in hospital. The death toll could rise, police warned.

Arrests and Investigation

A police spokesperson told AFP that a male principal offender and a female companion were arrested. A separate police statement mentioned a third suspect being held. Investigators believe the incident is not a case of femicide nor politically motivated, but rather an extended family tragedy. Der Spiegel reported that security forces indicated the shooting likely stemmed from a private dispute.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses reported seeing a young man and a woman attempting to flee the scene in a silver Mercedes before being intercepted by police. According to Focus Online, police fired at least 15 shots after the car failed to stop, blowing out a rear tire and bringing the vehicle to a halt. Video footage from Bild showed a person in a white T-shirt slumping out of the driver's seat onto the road, with an officer pointing a gun at them. Another officer attended to the passenger lying on a grassy verge.

Scene and Response

Police cordoned off the area on a cobbled, tree-lined street with redbrick homes. Forensic experts and plainclothes officers were present. Residents were initially told to avoid the area but later informed there was no danger to the general public. A home for mothers and children in the same building was unaffected, police said. Local councillor Carsten Brokelmann thanked police for their efforts and expressed condolences to the victims' families.

Context

Mass shootings are rare in Germany compared to the US, but high-profile cases have occurred. In 2023, a gunman killed six at a Jehovah's Witness hall in Hamburg before killing himself. In 2016, an 18-year-old German-Iranian man killed at least nine in Munich.
