Russian Jet Flies Within 6 Metres of RAF Spy Plane in 'Dangerous' Incident
Russian Jet in Near Miss with RAF Spy Plane

A Russian Su-27 jet flew within six metres of an unarmed RAF Rivet Joint spy plane over the Black Sea in mid-April, one of two incidents described as "dangerous and unacceptable" by UK Defence Secretary John Healey.

Details of the Incident

The Su-27 conducted six passes in front of the British aircraft, which was flying at 500mph, risking a collision that could have sparked a diplomatic crisis. In a separate encounter, a Russian Su-35 jet flew so close to the Rivet Joint that it triggered emergency systems, including disabling the autopilot, during a surveillance mission in international airspace.

UK Response

Healey condemned the actions, stating: "This incident is another example of dangerous and unacceptable behaviour by Russian pilots, towards an unarmed aircraft operating in international airspace. These actions create a serious risk of accidents and potential escalation." The Ministry of Defence noted it was the most dangerous Russian action against a British Rivet Joint since a missile was fired over the Black Sea in 2022.

Broader Context

Russia has increased military activity across Europe. Lithuanian politicians sheltered in bunkers and Vilnius airport suspended flights after a drone violated its airspace. Russia's UN ambassador claimed Ukraine planned to launch drones from Baltic states, which Latvia dismissed as fiction. Two Russian frigates escorted oil tankers and suspected arms through the North Sea and Dover Strait, requiring a month-long Royal Navy patrol. Healey also revealed three Russian submarines loitered near critical undersea infrastructure in the North Atlantic for a month before departing.

Healey praised the RAF crew's professionalism: "I would like to pay tribute to the outstanding professionalism and bravery of the RAF crew who continued with their mission despite these dangerous actions. Let me be very clear: This incident will not deter the UK's commitment to defend Nato, our allies and our interests from Russian aggression."
