Melissa Gilbert Denies Naivety and Complicity in Husband's Sexual Abuse Case
In a highly anticipated interview on Good Morning America, actress Melissa Gilbert firmly rejected suggestions that she is naive or complicit for standing by her husband, fellow actor Timothy Busfield, who faces serious child sexual abuse charges in New Mexico. The former Little House on the Prairie star declared she has heard Busfield's side of the story exclusively and believes it represents the truth.
"I Know This Man in My Bones"
Gilbert made her first public comments since prosecutors charged Busfield in early February with child sexual abuse allegedly occurring on the set of a television show. During the emotional interview with host George Stephanopoulos, Gilbert stated, "I know this man in my bones. No one knows him better than I do." She emphasized her confidence in Busfield's eventual exoneration while acknowledging the need to prepare for all possible outcomes in the legal case.
Addressing Past Allegations
The interview revealed Gilbert had confronted Busfield about previous sexual misconduct allegations before their relationship began. These include:
- A 1994 incident where a 17-year-old extra on Busfield's film Little Big League claimed he assaulted her after serving her alcohol
- Allegations that Busfield groped a 16-year-old girl during an audition at Sacramento's B Street Theatre, which he co-founded
Gilbert told Stephanopoulos she thoroughly questioned Busfield about these matters and was satisfied with his explanations. "I am neither naive, nor am I complicit," she asserted. "I talked to him about it; I asked him questions about it; I heard his side of the story - which no one else has ever heard, which is the truth."
Current Charges and Legal Proceedings
Busfield faces charges related to alleged inappropriate touching of two young boys between November 2022 and spring 2024 on the set of the TV drama series The Cleaning Lady, where he worked as both director and actor. Prosecutors claim the incidents involved one boy being touched over his clothing at ages seven and eight, with his twin brother also reporting similar alleged misconduct.
The 68-year-old actor, known for roles in Revenge of the Nerds, The West Wing, and Field of Dreams, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. In a video shared with TMZ, Busfield dismissed the accusations as "all lies." He is tentatively scheduled for trial in May 2027 and has been allowed to await proceedings outside of custody.
Gilbert's Defense of Her Husband
Gilbert explained her decision to speak publicly stemmed from concern about misinformation circulating regarding the case. "We've been hearing and reading too much untruth," she told Stephanopoulos. She described Busfield as "an honorable, caring, generous human being" and maintained that he has been completely honest with her throughout their relationship.
The actress, who married Busfield in 2013, acknowledged that her husband would eventually share his version of events regarding past allegations but indicated "that time is not now." She expressed unwavering support for Busfield while navigating the complex legal and personal challenges presented by the serious charges against him.
