Richard Clayton, 45, has pleaded guilty to murdering his 74-year-old mother Angela Clayton at their home in Newham, east London, on Tuesday, February 17. He strangled her in her bedroom and then called 999 to report himself.
Police response and arrest
Officers arrived at the scene at 12.48pm alongside the London Ambulance Service, where they pronounced Mrs Clayton dead. Clayton was taken into custody and during police interviews either answered no comment, remained silent, or pretended to be asleep. He was charged with murder the following day.
Family statement and police comments
Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, from Scotland Yard, said: 'Our thoughts are with Angela’s family and friends, who have lost a much-loved mother, grandmother and friend. While no outcome can undo their loss, we hope today’s conviction brings them some measure of closure. Our commitment to tackling violence against women and girls remains firm.'
In a statement, Mrs Clayton’s family said: 'Everything we have done over the last six months has been entirely for our mum, Angela, to ensure she received the justice she completely deserved.'
Sentencing
Clayton will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, September 22.
