Five people, including two children, were found dead in a home in Winfield, Kansas, on Wednesday in what authorities described as an apparent familicide. A suspect has been taken into custody, according to local police.
Discovery and Initial Response
Police were called to a residence in the 1500 block of East 10th Avenue just before 11 a.m. after a concerned family member requested a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of four adults and one child inside the home, all suffering from gunshot wounds.
Winfield police chief Brett Harrison said at a press conference that the victims were related and that the incident appears to be a murder-suicide. He declined to release the names of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
Suspect in Custody
Harrison said a 34-year-old man, who is a relative of the victims, was found at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition. The suspect is expected to face charges once he is released from medical care.
The chief said that investigators are still working to determine a motive, but there was no prior history of domestic violence calls to the address. Neighbors described the family as quiet and kept to themselves.
