Arrests Made Over East London Synagogue Arson Attack

A man and a woman have been arrested in connection with an arson attack at a former synagogue in east London. The 45-year-old man and 52-year-old woman were taken into custody earlier today (Sunday, May 10) on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and remain in police custody.

Details of the Incident

Police were alerted by firefighters at approximately 5:15 AM on Tuesday, May 5, following reports of a fire at the former synagogue on Nelson Street in Tower Hamlets. The blaze caused slight damage to a set of gates and a lock at the front of the building. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Police Investigation

Commander Helen Flanagan described the arrests as a significant step in the ongoing investigation. She stated: “Today’s arrests are a significant step in our investigation into this attack and our enquiries are ongoing. Our aim continues to arrest and charge all those responsible for the arson attacks and other incidents targeted at Jewish, Israeli and Iranian sites in recent weeks.”

Flanagan emphasized that hateful attacks on communities will not be tolerated. Counter-terrorism officers are working closely with Metropolitan Police colleagues to provide protective security advice and support to various organizations, community venues, and businesses. She urged the public to report any suspicious behavior, saying: “Your information could help us save lives.”

Community Impact

Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter highlighted that the attack occurred at a synagogue in the process of being sold to a local Somali Muslim organisation. He noted that those of all faiths in the local area have felt targeted and together condemn this horrendous act. Richter added: “Our work to engage with and reassure all communities affected by recent events continues, and as always we want to hear of any fears or concerns so we can address them.”

He reiterated that no hate crime will be tolerated, regardless of who it is against, describing such acts as completely unacceptable and having no place in society.
