Newington Green named London's coolest neighbourhood 2026

Time Out has named Newington Green the coolest neighbourhood in London for 2026, replacing last year's winner Camberwell. The area, nestled between Dalston and Green Lanes, centres around its almost-never-empty green space and is popular with families and young professionals alike.

Why Newington Green tops the list

The surrounding streets are lined with countless restaurants, bakeries and pubs, many of which routinely appear in 'Best of' lists. Acclaimed spots include Perilla, a laidback restaurant celebrating seasonal Mediterranean cuisine, and Cadet, a French bistro and wine bar known for its charcuterie, small plates, and excellent wine. Bar Etna's East Coast-style pizza has also been getting attention.

Visitors to the area also shouldn't miss reliable gastropubs Lady Mildmay and The Golden Tooth, posh bakery Jolene, and long-standing pub The Army and Navy. The iconic Mildmay Club offers a members bar and endless events for £35 a year. In recent years, the area has grown a reputation for appearing in music videos and promotions for big names such as Taylor Swift and Oasis.

Global ranking and expert comment

Newington Green is one of just three places in the UK to make the 40 Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World for 2026, coming in at 33rd. Glasgow's Govanhill placed at number five, whilst Cathedral Quarter in Belfast ranks 24th. Taking the global number one spot is Jongno 3-ga in Seoul, where one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods is finding new energy without losing its character, Time Out said.

Grace Beard, travel editor at Time Out, said: "Now in its ninth year, Time Out's Coolest Neighbourhoods is a definitive annual guide to the greatest places to eat, drink, shop and hang out right now. Every spot on this list was chosen by a local expert because it showcases the very best of their city, from exciting new ventures in food and drink to community initiatives and day-to-night fun."

Beard added: "This year's ranking reflects the changing face of city life. There are more downtown neighbourhoods on the list than in previous years; a city centre resurgence that reflects the evolution of how we live, work and play in our cities. Elsewhere, there are seaside strips, homely enclaves, creative zones and booming dining destinations. In short, these are the unmissable neighbourhoods for your next city break, and well worth planning a trip around over the next 12 months."
