Ann Widdecombe was attacked nearly 24 hours before she was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon and Cornwall Police have said in an updated statement.

Timeline of events

Police were called to the property by the ambulance service at around 11:40am on Thursday 9 July. The 78-year-old was found deceased with serious injuries. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated: "Officers were called to Miss Widdecombe’s home at Haytor by the ambulance service at around 11.40am on Thursday 9 July. Sadly, 78-year-old Miss Widdecombe was located deceased within the property. She had sustained serious injuries… We believe the attack took place on Wednesday 8 July at around 12.30pm."

Investigation ongoing

The suspect is described as a white male. A cordon remains in place at the property while forensic examinations continue. Road closures are in effect, and a significant police presence is in the area as detectives conduct house-to-house and CCTV enquiries. The public is urged to remain vigilant.
