Starmer Faces Growing Rebellion as Labour MPs Demand Exit

Keir Starmer began the day already damaged, with as many as 40 MPs calling for him to set out a timetable for his departure. By Monday evening, that number had swelled to over 60, including three junior frontbenchers, in what appeared to be an orchestrated move.

In a speech at a London community centre, Starmer acknowledged his critics, saying, "I know I have my doubters, and I know I need to prove them wrong, and I will." However, many Labour MPs remained unconvinced. One previously loyal backbencher stated, "I always bought the argument that changing leader would undermine all our promises about stability, however bad things were. But it’s gone too far – we can’t go on like this."

Catherine West, who initially announced a leadership challenge, later changed course to call for an orderly transition. "I am hereby giving notice to No 10 that I am collecting names of Labour MPs to call on the prime minister to set a timetable for the election of a new leader in September," she said, effectively launching a de facto confidence vote.

Wes Streeting, a key leadership contender, remained silent, though his allies hinted at an imminent move. Late Monday, senior cabinet members, including Yvette Cooper and Shabana Mahmood, urged Starmer to accept an orderly process, while others like Richard Hermer encouraged him to fight on.

Many of the rebellious MPs are backers of Andy Burnham, frustrated that he cannot challenge Starmer due to his lack of a parliamentary seat. Angela Rayner, once seen as a likely successor, has seen her support wane, while Burnham's stock rises.

Despite Starmer's speech, his position worsened by day's end. Although only 15% of the parliamentary party called for him to go, the momentum suggests more could follow. Starmer's allies urged calm, but many MPs are not listening.
