Michelle Obama Talks Politics and Going 'A Little Low' in First Australian Event
Michelle Obama's Sharp Remarks on US Politics in Australia

Michelle Obama delivered veiled but sharp remarks on current US politics during her first-ever speaking event in Australia, addressing wealth, happiness, and her famous mantra of going high.

High Ticket Prices and Empty Seats

The former first lady's speaking tour, organized by Growth Faculty, drew a sizable crowd on a Tuesday afternoon in Melbourne despite ticket prices ranging from $195 to $895. The more expensive packages included priority seating, an exclusive brunch, and commemorative items. Some attendees noted empty patches at the front of the venue, and ticket upgrades were offered due to changing production requirements.

Political Commentary

Host Annabel Crabb initially stated she would not ask about current politics, citing a convention that former first ladies do not comment on such matters. Obama responded humorously: “And what else is there to say? I’m sorry?” However, she did not shy away from veiled critiques. When Crabb quoted a senator’s remark about the dumbest guy in politics, Obama interjected, prompting applause.

Reflecting on her catchphrase “When they go low, we go high,” Obama said: “You know those folks aren’t happy. You don’t show up like that in the world and have that not eating away at your soul.” She added that accumulating wealth does not equate to happiness, noting that many billionaires are unhappy. “I guess I don’t agree with the fact that they are getting away with all of this and it seems to be fine. It isn’t fine. None of this is fine,” she said.

Armour Against Criticism

Obama discussed the racist abuse she faced during her White House years and criticism of initiatives like healthy eating. She described building an armour but admitted to sometimes needing to go “a little low” by venting in private. “Going high isn’t just a public act of stoicism all the time,” she said. After eight years in the White House and eight more of recovery, the Obamas focus on spreading hope through speaking events and their media company Higher Ground.

Obama’s dream podcast guest would be Dolly Parton or Elton John. She reflected on meeting Nelson Mandela, popes, and Maya Angelou, saying: “We’ve lived an extraordinary life.” After Melbourne, she heads to Sydney for two more shows hosted by Leigh Sales.
