Avengers director Joe Russo has weighed in on the debate surrounding spoiler culture, suggesting that it can sometimes become over-policed. Speaking at the Sands International Film Festival, Russo and his sister, producer Angela Russo-Otstot, discussed the immense responsibility of keeping Marvel scripts under wraps, especially with the highly anticipated release of Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon.
The Burden of Secrecy
Joe Russo acknowledged that spoiler culture presents a tricky balance. On one hand, audiences crave surprise, which is a key element of the theatrical experience. On the other, excessive policing can create anxiety around engaging with content. The Russo brothers, who returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after seven years, are filming Avengers: Doomsday back-to-back with its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, mirroring their approach to Infinity War and Endgame.
Angela Russo-Otstot, Chief Creative Officer of AGBO, emphasized the lengths they go to plot exciting reveals while honoring the integrity of the intellectual property. She noted that surprises and twists are carefully crafted to delight fans without spoiling the experience for others.
Protecting the Emotional Journey
Joe Russo stressed that protecting the emotional experience of the story is paramount. He acknowledged that not everything can be controlled, but the focus should be on creating content that holds up beyond initial surprises. The simultaneous global release of Avengers films fosters a shared experience, allowing audiences worldwide to discover and discuss the story together.
Marvel has faced spoiler challenges before, such as when Samuel L. Jackson's script was leaked in 2012. The company has since implemented strict security protocols, which other productions, including Game of Thrones, have emulated. AGBO follows similar measures, with limited access to sensitive information.
AGBO's Expanding Portfolio
Beyond Marvel, AGBO is experiencing a record-breaking year with multiple productions worldwide, including Citadel season 2 and the pirate film The Bluff. The company also offers creative services through visualization technology, aiding in the production of fantastical elements.
The Sands International Film Festival, co-founded by AGBO, continues to grow while maintaining its intimate atmosphere. Joe Russo hopes to expand its impact without losing its core identity, supporting new voices and fostering meaningful connections.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
