Stephen Fleming has been appointed as England men's Test coach, bringing a reputation for calm leadership and strategic cunning. The New Zealander, who won five Indian Premier League titles with Chennai Super Kings, is known for his ability to read games and people.
Fleming's tactical genius at Nottinghamshire
In 2005, Nottinghamshire under Fleming's captaincy faced Kent in a crucial County Championship match. With rain washing out most of the second day, a draw seemed likely. But Fleming proposed a bold plan: offer Kent a chase of 420 in 70 overs. Darren Bicknell, his teammate, called it "a stroke of genius." Kent accepted, but were bowled out for 205, giving Notts the title with a game to spare. "He was just very calm all the time, very unruffled," Bicknell said.
Mind games and empathy
Fleming is not averse to psychological tactics. In a 2004 ODI against South Africa, he unleashed a stream of invective at Graeme Smith, who had previously accused Fleming of mind games. Smith responded emotionally, scoring just 15 off 33, and New Zealand won by two runs. "Graeme is an emotional guy. That was one chink we thought we might explore," Fleming later said. Yet those who have worked with him describe an empathetic leader. David Alleyne, another Notts teammate, said: "He was quite simply an outstanding leader of men."
IPL success and criticism
Fleming's success at Chennai Super Kings has been attributed by some to MS Dhoni. Hemang Badani, head coach of Delhi Capitals, said in 2024: "He's never won anywhere outside the IPL. If someone says he's a great coach, I wouldn't agree." But Chris Jordan, who played under Fleming at CSK and Southern Brave, disagrees. "He comes with a lot of empathy. He has a very relaxed aura but he's still very detailed in his planning," Jordan said. "He found a way of getting us to find simplicity within the chaos."
Combination with Joe Root
Jordan also played alongside Joe Root, who has returned as England captain. "I definitely think Joe and Flem as a combination will be quite excellent," Jordan said. "Flem could take Joe Root's captaincy to the next level." Fleming's ability to bring out the best in players and create role clarity is expected to benefit the England Test side.
