The Royal Family made a poignant appearance at the Royal British Legion's Festival of Remembrance on Saturday evening, a significant event held at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall.
A Gathering of Royals and Dignitaries
King Charles III, accompanied by the Princess of Wales and a young Prince George, were among the distinguished guests at this year's ceremony. The King, who became patron of the Royal British Legion last year, wore his military medals for the occasion. Notably absent was the Prince of Wales, who is currently representing the UK at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer, were also in attendance, showing cross-party support for the armed forces community. The event was gracefully hosted by Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham.
Commemorating Significant Anniversaries
This year's festival carried profound historical weight, commemorating two major milestones. It marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, a moment of reflection for the nation's greatest generation.
Simultaneously, the event celebrated the 25th anniversary of the UK government lifting the ban on gay, lesbian and bisexual personnel serving openly in the armed forces. This dual commemoration highlighted both traditional remembrance and progress toward inclusivity within the military.
A Night of Musical Tributes
The evening featured an impressive lineup of performers paying tribute to service and sacrifice. Music legend Sir Rod Stewart took to the stage alongside Eurovision sensation Sam Ryder and acclaimed singer Keala Settle.
The musical programme was further enriched by stirring performances from the Central Band of the RAF, the RAF Squadronaires, and the Band of HM Royal Marines, creating a powerful atmosphere of reflection and respect.
The Princess of Wales chose her attire with thoughtful symbolism, wearing a black dress adorned with a handmade poppy crafted from silk, glass and other natural materials. She completed her ensemble with earrings that once belonged to the late Queen, adding a touching personal tribute to the occasion.
This solemn gathering sets the stage for Remembrance Sunday, when the King will lead the nation in a two-minute silence at the Cenotaph during the National Service of Remembrance, continuing the tradition of honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
