Following the announcement that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will not reside at Buckingham Palace after its refurbishment, readers have offered creative suggestions for the future of the royal residence. The palace, which underwent a £369m renovation, will no longer serve as the monarch's primary London home.
Proposal to house Parliament
Richard Churcher of London proposed temporarily moving the Houses of Parliament into Buckingham Palace while a new parliamentary building is constructed, ideally in Birmingham or Manchester to signify devolution. He noted that the current Parliament buildings are no longer fit for purpose, and a move could allow taxpayers to benefit from the £369m spent on the palace. Part of the palace could still be used for ceremonial purposes, but the symbolism of a change in ownership would mark a shift towards more meritocratic government.
Other suggestions
Keith Flett suggested that the palace could become a Wetherspoon's pub, as the chain specializes in operating in historic buildings. Jude Carr humorously proposed turning it into an heir B&B. These letters reflect public engagement with the monarchy's changing role and the future of iconic buildings.
