Princess Eugenie names baby girl Adelaide in Queen tribute

Princess Eugenie has announced the name of her newborn daughter, Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, in a heartfelt tribute to her late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. The royal, who is 12th in line to the throne, shared the news on Instagram, revealing that the baby was born two weeks ago in Portugal.

Royal Baby Name Honors Queen and Family Heritage

In her Instagram post, Eugenie explained the significance behind the name, writing: 'Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home.' The name Adelaide has royal connections, while Elizabeth directly honors the late Queen, and Annina is a nod to Portuguese heritage.

The couple, who also have sons August and Ernest, welcomed their first daughter, and Eugenie added that they have 'had the most special, cosy and love-filled time' since Adelaide's birth. She also noted that 'Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.'

Line of Succession and Family Dynamics

Adelaide, who will not hold the title HRH, is 15th in line to the throne, pushing her great-uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, down to 16th place. She is also the 15th great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and the third born since the Queen's death in 2022. The newborn is the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, following the birth of Princess Beatrice's daughter Athena Mapelli Mozzi in January of the previous year.

The birth marks a rare occasion of a royal baby born overseas, as Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank have a home and other connections in Portugal. The couple met in 2010 through mutual friends. Brooksbank, educated at Stowe, worked as a waiter at Chelsea's Admiral Codrington pub before moving to Piers Adam's Markham Inn, where he befriended Prince Harry and Guy Pelly. He later became manager at Mayfair hotspot Mahiki, a favorite haunt of the Duke of Sussex and other royals.

Royal Blessing and Future Steps

Eugenie and Jack reportedly visited the Queen at Balmoral for Prince Harry's 32nd birthday in 2016, where the monarch is said to have given her blessing for their marriage. The couple's growing family continues to expand the royal fold, with Adelaide's arrival adding to the next generation of royals.

As the royal family adjusts to the new addition, Adelaide's name serves as a lasting tribute to the Queen's legacy, blending English and Portuguese influences that reflect the couple's life together.
