Kate and Princess Charlotte surprise with festive piano duet for Christmas special
Kate and Charlotte's surprise Christmas piano duet

The Princess of Wales and her daughter, Princess Charlotte, delighted viewers with an unexpected musical performance during this year's festive television broadcast. The mother-and-daughter duo performed a piano duet to open the annual Together at Christmas carol service, which aired on Wednesday evening.

A Special Musical Moment at Windsor

The heartwarming segment was pre-recorded last week in the Inner Hall at Windsor Castle. Kate and Charlotte played 'Holm Sound' by Scottish composer Erland Cooper, a piece they reportedly enjoy practising together at their family home. Cooper, whose work is inspired by nature and connection, was personally invited to Windsor to observe the filming.

A spokesperson noted that 'their Royal Highnesses were delighted to be joined on the day by Erland who was able to give them some guidance between takes'. In a touching personal link, the composer wrote the composition for his own mother, who is also named Charlotte.

The Fifth Annual Carol Service

The main carol service itself was held on 5 December at Westminster Abbey. The Princess of Wales was joined by Prince William and their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—for the event. It marked the fifth iteration of Kate's Together at Christmas initiative, which has become a cherished festive tradition.

This year's gathering hosted a congregation of 1,600 people, bringing together representatives from the various charitable causes supported by the Prince and Princess of Wales. The overriding theme for the service was the importance of love.

A Message of Care and Community

In a letter to the congregation, the Princess of Wales reflected on the power of 'simple acts of care which might seem small', particularly during times when life can feel fragmented or uncertain. Prince William also addressed the attendees during the service.

This is not the first time Catherine has showcased her piano skills for the event; in 2021, she performed alongside singer Tom Walker at Westminster Abbey. The latest duet with her young daughter, however, offered a uniquely personal glimpse into the family's private moments and shared passions.
