Sagal Abdi-Wali has been selected as the next leader of Camden Council following a vote by Labour councillors elected at the Town Hall elections. She will succeed Richard Olszewski, who lost his seat to the Green Party in Thursday's boroughwide ballot.
Tight Vote Decides New Leader
Councillors who retained their seats or were elected for the first time met on Monday evening to choose the new leader. The contest was exceptionally close, with Abdi-Wali and her opponent, Adam Harrison, tying in the first round of voting. In a subsequent vote, a single councillor switched their support, giving Abdi-Wali the victory.
Abdi-Wali will make history as the first black woman to lead Camden Council when her appointment is formally confirmed at the Town Hall next week. During the previous council term, she held the housing portfolio, while Harrison was responsible for environmental policies.
