Trump Administration Extends Deportation Protections for Lebanese Nationals
US Extends Deportation Protections for Lebanese

The Trump administration has extended protections shielding approximately 11,000 Lebanese nationals from deportation, granting them permission to remain and work in the United States for an additional six months. This decision, announced on Thursday by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), represents a rare reprieve for individuals covered by temporary measures that have faced strong criticism from Republicans. The extension comes as fighting continues in southern Lebanon between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters.

Automatic Extension Due to Missed Deadline

The decision was automatic, as the administration missed the deadline by which they were required to decide on extending the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Lebanese beneficiaries. According to statute, if the department fails to meet the deadline, the status automatically extends for six months. This outcome is unusual for an administration that has terminated protections for individuals from 13 other countries, including Venezuela, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Syria.

Background of Temporary Protected Status

TPS was established by Congress in 1990 to prevent deportations to countries experiencing natural disasters or civil strife, providing work authorization in increments of up to 18 months. At the start of the Trump administration, over one million immigrants from 17 countries were protected under TPS, following the Biden administration's significant expansion of the program.

Details of the Extension

The DHS notice stated that former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and current Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who has led the department for the past two months, were unable to make an informed determination on Lebanon's TPS designation by the March 28 deadline. The extension ensures that existing beneficiaries retain their protections until November 27, 2026, provided they still meet eligibility requirements. Work permits already issued for Lebanese TPS holders will remain valid until that same date.
