Newham residents are among a select group of Londoners who will be casting two different votes at the local elections on May 7. As well as voting for their ward councillor to represent them on the council, residents will be voting for who they want to be Mayor of Newham - the person in charge of leading the council and making some executive decisions.
Only five London boroughs have a directly elected Mayor - Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Croydon and Lewisham are the other four - while all other boroughs are led by a Council Leader chosen by the party with the most councillors.
Labour currently holds 56 of the 66 seats on Newham Council plus the position of Mayor. Newham Independents have four councillors, the Green Party has three and there are three other Independent councillors. Polling predictions from YouGov and PollCheck suggest the Green Party will give Labour the strongest challenge while independents are expected to take a significant share of the vote.
