Met Commissioner Criticizes Green Party Leader Over Terror Arrest Comments
The Metropolitan Police commissioner, Mark Rowley, has sharply criticized Green Party leader Zack Polanski for sharing a social media post that questioned the actions of officers who arrested a terror suspect in Golders Green, London. Rowley warned that such criticism could have a 'chilling effect' on police operations.
Details of the Incident
On Wednesday, police arrested a 45-year-old man after two Jewish individuals were stabbed in the northwest London suburb. Officers used a Taser to subdue the suspect, who is being treated for terrorism-related offenses. The Crown Prosecution Service is currently reviewing the case for potential charges.
Polanski retweeted a post on X that accused officers of 'repeatedly and violently kicking a mentally ill man in the head' while he was already incapacitated. The post did not include any additional commentary from Polanski.
Rowley's Response
In a letter to Polanski, Rowley described the post as 'inaccurate and misinformed commentary.' He defended the officers' actions, stating, 'Without their efforts to stop him, I dread to think what the outcome could have been.' Rowley emphasized that London's Jewish communities are scared and expect police to act decisively.
Rowley wrote, 'The officers confronted a dangerous man they believed to be a terrorist, who refused to show his hands, who was violent and who continued to pose a clear threat.' He called on political leaders to show solidarity, saying, 'That solidarity matters, and at this moment we need politicians and community leaders to be at the forefront of it.'
Green Party Response
A Green Party source stated, 'Zack has seen the video like everyone else, and doesn’t know the full picture and knows it was a very difficult situation for the authorities, but we do need to understand more about the response.' The party earlier released a statement condemning the attack as 'an appalling act of antisemitic violence' and expressing solidarity with the British Jewish community.
