Moderate Democratic Representative Ed Case has successfully defended his seat in Hawaii's first congressional district, defeating a progressive challenger in Saturday's primary. With 91% of votes counted, Case secured 60% of the vote, while state senator Jarrett Keohokalole trailed with 36.1%, according to the Associated Press.
Case's Victory and Background
Case, who has represented the district in Washington DC since 2019, will now face Republican Adriel Lam in the general election. Lam ran unopposed in the GOP primary. Case expressed gratitude for the voters' support, telling Hawaii Public Radio, "I feel very grateful that the voters want me to continue in office."
The primary outcome stands in contrast to a recent wave of progressive victories in Democratic primaries across the country. Earlier this week, Abdul El-Sayed won a high-profile primary in Michigan. Attention now shifts to Wisconsin, where Democratic socialist Francesca Hong is leading the party's gubernatorial primary.
Keohokalole's Campaign and Concession
Keohokalole, 43, had argued that Hawaii needed a new generation of political leadership. He conceded gracefully, stating to KHON2, "The voters decided, and we respect the results. The seats don't belong to any individual. You have to earn them, and so the voters spoke."
Keohokalole had criticized Case for voting last year for the Save Act, which would require voters to prove citizenship when registering for federal elections. Case later distanced himself from the legislation after a provision allowing written attestation was removed. He used the vote to emphasize his independent streak, telling HawaiiNewsNow, "I'm not 100% voter with my party. Never have been, never will be."
Case's Strategy and Committee Role
Case holds a senior position on a key spending committee and argued that Hawaii would lose federal funding if he were not re-elected. Keohokalole, meanwhile, highlighted Case's campaign donations from businesses to suggest he had lost touch with voters.
Other Primary Results in Hawaii
In the second congressional district, incumbent Jill Tokuda also won the Democratic primary, capturing 91.6% of votes with 90% counted. Governor Josh Green, who has led the state since 2022, defeated several challengers for the Democratic nomination.
Hawaii's first district covers the urban center of Honolulu, while the second district encompasses the rest of the state. Case's victory ensures that the seat remains in Democratic hands, setting up a general election contest against Lam.
