In a significant political development, the Venezuelan military has formally sworn loyalty to Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's turbulent transition. This move comes as Rodríguez, who served as vice-president under the ousted leader Nicolás Maduro, undertakes sweeping changes to consolidate her authority and navigate complex international pressures.
Military Overhaul Amid Political Upheaval
Rodríguez announced the replacement of all senior military commanders in a social media statement on Thursday, describing it as the "designation of the renewed military high command." This decision follows her dismissal of the long-serving defence minister, a close ally of Maduro, who was replaced with a former intelligence chief. The shake-up is part of a broader series of adjustments since the United States orchestrated Maduro's removal in a special forces raid on January 3, which toppled the authoritarian leftwinger from power.
Balancing US Demands and Domestic Loyalty
Tasked with leading a country endowed with the world's largest proven oil reserves but plagued by economic collapse, Rodríguez faces immense challenges. Under intense US pressure, including threats of violence, she has enacted a historic amnesty law to release political prisoners jailed under Maduro's regime. Additionally, she has revised oil and mining regulations to align with US demands for access to Venezuela's vast natural resources, as part of efforts to stabilize the crippled economy, which suffers from widespread shortages of food, medicine, and other essentials.
Former US President Donald Trump has asserted that he effectively governs Venezuela now, permitting Rodríguez to remain in power contingent on her adherence to US directives. This places Rodríguez in a precarious position, as she must simultaneously satisfy Trump's expectations and appease Venezuelans who remain loyal to Maduro, who, along with his wife, has been extradited to New York to face trial on US-issued drug trafficking charges.
The Military's Pivotal Role
The Venezuelan military, now pledging allegiance to Rodríguez, is a formidable institution with extensive influence over the nation's key sectors. It oversees critical enterprises in oil, mining, and food distribution, as well as customs operations and major government ministries. However, this power has been marred by allegations of abuse and corruption, adding another layer of complexity to Rodríguez's leadership challenges. As Venezuela moves to restore diplomatic ties with the US two months after Maduro's capture, the military's loyalty and restructuring will be crucial in shaping the country's future trajectory amid ongoing political and economic instability.
