British Pensioner Killed in Violent Ghana Robbery
A 68-year-old British pensioner was shot and killed after a gang on motorbikes attempted to steal his mobile phone at a bar in Ghana. The tragic incident occurred on Friday, November 9, 2025, in the industrial city of Tema, located about 15 miles east of the capital, Accra.
Details of the Attack
The victim, named as Ashraf Qarmar Parvez, was sitting at a bar when he was approached by a group of six men. According to police statements, two of the assailants moved in, with one snatching Mr Parvez's mobile phone from the table. When the victim attempted to wrestle his phone back, one of the suspects shot him. The entire gang then fled the scene on their motorbikes.
Mr Parvez was rushed to Tema General Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Police have confirmed that a 9mm shell was retrieved from the scene and witnesses are being interviewed to aid the ongoing investigation and urgent search operation to find the killers.
Police Response and Security Concerns
The Tema Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale operation to track down the perpetrators. This violent event has raised security concerns in Tema, a major seaport and industrial hub for Ghana. However, in a statement to the BBC, a local police spokesperson sought to reassure the public, stating that the shooting was a rare incident.
This case emerges amidst reported police efforts to intensify operations against armed robbery groups in the region. In September 2025, officers successfully dismantled a 15-member gang responsible for a violent spree of robberies targeting banks, as reported by News Ghana.
An FCDO spokesperson has confirmed they are supporting the family of a man who has died in Ghana.
