A former butler to King Charles has revealed a strict rule the monarch enforces in his car: absolutely no snacks are allowed. Grant Harrold, who worked for the royal household, shared insights into the King's driving habits and preferences.
The King's Car Rules
Speaking on behalf of Select Car Leasing, Harrold explained that King Charles is meticulous about keeping his vehicle clean. While mints are permitted—especially before public speaking—all other food is banned. “The King never had snacks in the car as he really doesn't like mess,” Harrold said.
Bottles of water are always available for the royals, and the King keeps a cushion for back support. He often works during long drives, with official documents on hand. “He was always working away, especially if it was a long drive,” Harrold added.
A Memorable Drive
Harrold recalled a surreal moment when the King drove him and other butlers around the Balmoral Estate. “It was the King and the Duke of Westminster in the front, and me and one of the other butlers in the back. He was a very good driver,” Harrold said. Despite bumpy country lanes, they had a normal conversation.
Eco-Friendly Fleet Changes
The King has made eco-friendly changes to his fleet, converting his Aston Martin DB6 Volante to run on wine and cheese waste. Two Royal Bentley State Limousines were adapted to run on biofuel in 2024. Last year, he reportedly acquired a Lotus Eletre SUV, an Anglo-Chinese model with nearly 1,000hp and a 0-62mph time under three seconds.
