Trump Suggests 'Fun' Strikes on Iran's Key Oil Hub, Rejects Peace Deal Prospects
In a startling interview with NBC News on Saturday, US President Donald Trump indicated that the United States might conduct additional military strikes on Iran's crucial Kharg Island oil export facility "just for fun". This provocative statement came as he downplayed any immediate prospects for a peace agreement with Tehran, bluntly asserting that "the terms aren't good enough yet."
Military Actions and Economic Impact
Trump claimed that US operations had "totally demolished" most of Kharg Island, a vital component of Iran's oil infrastructure. However, he noted that energy lines were intentionally spared to avoid prolonged reconstruction efforts. "We've totally decimated it," he stated. "Except, as you know, I didn't do anything having to do with the energy lines, because having to rebuild that would take years."
The conflict, now in its second week, has severely disrupted global energy markets. The paralysis of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's crude oil typically flows, has driven oil prices to their highest levels in four years. This surge has triggered a rapid increase in fuel costs worldwide, including within the United States.
Uncertainty Over Regional Stability
During the 30-minute telephone call, Trump expressed uncertainty about whether Iran had deployed mines in the Strait of Hormuz. He announced plans for a strong sweeping operation in the strait, suggesting that other nations affected by the oil blockade would join the effort. "We're going to be sweeping the strait very strongly, and we believe we'll be joined by other countries who are somewhat impeded, and in some cases impeded from getting the oil," he said, though he did not specify which countries might participate or provide a timeline.
In a Truth Social post earlier on Saturday, Trump called for international cooperation to secure the strait, framing it as a collective responsibility. "The United States of America has beaten and completely decimated Iran, both Militarily, Economically, and in every other way, but the Countries of the World that receive Oil through the Hormuz Strait must take care of that passage, and we will help – A LOT," he wrote. He added that coordination would aim for "Harmony, Security, and Everlasting Peace!"
Contradictions and Speculations
Despite advocating for a "team effort", Trump later declined to confirm whether the US Navy would escort ships through the strait, telling NBC, "I don't want to tell you anything about that." This ambiguity marks a potential shift from his earlier emphasis on Operation Epic Fury as a unilateral US-Israeli show of force.
The president also raised unverified questions about the health of Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, pondering "whether he is even alive." Additionally, Trump expressed surprise that US allies in the Gulf region had been targeted by Iran, describing these attacks as "the biggest surprise I had of this whole thing" and noting that these countries "got shot at unnecessarily."
As tensions escalate, Trump's comments underscore a volatile approach to the conflict, blending military threats with dismissive rhetoric toward diplomatic resolutions. The ongoing crisis continues to strain global energy supplies and geopolitical stability, with no clear resolution in sight.
