The US Department of Interior on Monday released the names of three firefighters who were killed while working to contain wildfires along the Utah-Colorado border. Emily Barker, 38, of Michigan; Nick Hutcherson, 27, of Arizona; and Sydney Watson, 27, of Alabama died on Saturday while fighting the Knowles fire in western Colorado.
Helitack crew overwhelmed by flames
The three firefighters were part of a specialized helicopter-deployed Helitack crew that provides rapid response to wildfires, often in remote locations. They attempted to use tent-like fire shelters but were overcome by the flames, according to the Associated Press. Two other crew members were injured but not identified.
Fires merge into massive Snyder Mesa fire
The Knowles fire has merged with two other fires to form the Snyder Mesa fire, which the Colorado governor's office estimates has burned over 28,000 acres. Thousands of firefighters have been deployed across western US states and Alaska this month as dry, hot weather and high winds fuel wildfire growth.
State of emergency declared
Utah Governor Spencer Cox declared a state of emergency last week and banned personal fireworks until after the Fourth of July. Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced a similar state of emergency on Saturday. In a statement, Polis mourned the deaths: "The men and women who serve on the frontlines of these fires risk their lives to keep us safe and to protect the lands and communities we love. To the loved ones of those lost, and to their fellow crew members – some who are still battling the flames – know that the state of Colorado mourns alongside you."
Investigation launched
The Department of Interior has mobilized a serious accident investigation team to review the circumstances. Forest Service Deputy Chief Sarah Fisher said: "This is an incredibly difficult moment for the entire wildland fire community. Our heavy hearts are with the families during this unimaginable time." Several other officials, including Governors Cox and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, also issued condolences.
