The armed suspect who drove a vehicle into a large Michigan synagogue complex, which includes a school, had lost four family members in an Israeli airstrike in his native Lebanon just last week, according to an official statement on Friday. Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, a naturalized US citizen born in Lebanon, was identified as the perpetrator of the attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, on the outskirts of Detroit.

An Israeli airstrike on March 5 in Mashgharah, eastern Lebanon, killed four people, including Ghazali's two brothers, a niece, and a nephew, as they were breaking their fast during Ramadan. A local official, who requested anonymity, confirmed that Kassim and Ibrahim Ghazali were killed, along with Ibrahim's children, Ali and Fatima, while Ibrahim's wife was seriously wounded.
The official noted that Kassim was a well-known soccer coach and personal trainer, and Ibrahim worked as a school bus driver. Ghazali's father, who was in the US, recently returned to Lebanon following the tragedy.
