London Mayor's Armed Protection Officers Leave Bag with Guns on Street

The Metropolitan Police has launched an urgent investigation after a bag containing firearms and a Taser, issued to officers responsible for protecting London Mayor Sadiq Khan, was discovered on a street in south London by a member of the public. This serious security breach has led to five officers being removed from frontline duties while inquiries are conducted.

Incident Details and Public Discovery

According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 9:40 PM on Tuesday, March 31st. A member of the public called the police after finding a heavy bag on a kerbside in south London. Within seven minutes of the call, officers arrived at the scene and safely recovered the items. The bag was reported to contain an MP5 semi-automatic Heckler & Koch carbine, a Glock pistol, a Taser, and ammunition, as detailed by sources including the Sun newspaper.

Jordan Griffiths, a scaffolder, recounted the discovery, stating that his pregnant partner initially spotted the bag. "My partner saw the bag sitting in the road by the kerbside and became suspicious. She went over to it and kicked it to see what it might be. But it was really heavy and didn't move," he said. "It was lucky one of the guns inside didn't go off or else she and our baby, due next month, could have been shot and killed." Griffiths added that he took the bag inside, opened it, and was shocked to find the weapons.

Police Response and Investigation

The Metropolitan Police has referred the matter to its directorate of professional standards. A spokesperson confirmed, "We have made a referral to the Met's directorate of professional standards following an incident which took place on Tuesday 31 March. At around 21:40hrs, a member of the public called police after finding a bag containing Met-issued firearms and a Taser on a street in south London." The police acknowledged the concern this incident may cause and are urgently reviewing the circumstances, with initial beliefs suggesting the bag was misplaced by on-duty officers shortly before its discovery.

In response, a spokesperson for Mayor Sadiq Khan emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "This is a very serious incident, which has been referred to the Met's directorate of professional standards. The Met must now take all steps to ensure an incident like this never occurs again." Khan, who has served as London's mayor since 2016 after defeating Zac Goldsmith, receives 24-hour police protection due to his high-profile role.

Broader Implications and Security Concerns

This event raises significant questions about the protocols and accountability of armed protection units in London. The removal of five officers from frontline duties underscores the Metropolitan Police's commitment to addressing potential lapses in security procedures. As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to implement stricter measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future, ensuring public safety and maintaining trust in law enforcement operations.

The incident highlights the critical importance of vigilance and proper handling of firearms by police personnel, especially those tasked with protecting public figures. With ongoing reviews and potential disciplinary actions, this case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities borne by security teams in urban environments like London.
