Police Withhold Suspect Descriptions Following Epsom Rape, Urge Public Not to Speculate
Surrey Police have confirmed they are currently unable to release descriptions of the "several" men suspected of raping a woman in Epsom, stating they do not yet possess sufficient information. The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning outside Epsom Methodist Church on Ashley Road, following the victim's departure from Labyrinth Epsom nightclub.
Investigation Ongoing Amid Public Outcry
The force has conducted numerous witness interviews, executed extensive house-to-house enquiries, and is actively reviewing CCTV footage. Despite these efforts, East Surrey Chief Superintendent Mark Chapman emphasized that descriptions will only be made public "as soon as we are able to do so." The victim, a woman in her twenties, reported being followed and assaulted between 2am and 4am.
In response to the incident, a large crowd of protesters gathered in Epsom town centre on Wednesday evening, demanding more information about the suspects and reassurance regarding public safety. The demonstration, promoted online by former associate of right-wing activist Tommy Robinson, Danny Tommo, saw participants block roads and cause significant disruption before dispersing around 8pm.
Police Response to Protest and Broader Context
A substantial police presence, including officers in riot gear, was deployed to manage the protest. Chief Superintendent Chapman acknowledged the disruption and concern caused but reiterated the commitment to facilitating lawful protest while ensuring public safety. He stated unequivocally that criminal offences and public disorder will not be tolerated, with robust action promised against offenders.
This situation echoes past controversies, such as the criticism faced by Merseyside Police in 2024 for not disclosing the ethnicity of a suspect in a high-profile case. Following accusations of covering up offences by asylum seekers, police forces were advised in August of last year to share suspects' ethnicity and nationality with the public.
Surrey Police continue to urge witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area during the incident to come forward, referencing PR/45260041426. Anonymous tips can be submitted via Crimestoppers at 0800 555111 or through their online portal.
