The Metropolitan Police have intensified their search for an escaped prisoner by releasing a new CCTV image captured on a London bus, as the manhunt enters its second week. Daniel Boakye, a 21-year-old man, absconded from police custody at Lewisham Hospital on Sunday, February 15, at approximately 3:05 PM.
Second Escape in a Week
This incident marks the second time Boakye has escaped within a short period. He previously fled from prison guards at West Middlesex University Hospital on February 10, only to be recaptured by police the following day in Thamesmead. The latest escape has prompted a renewed appeal from authorities for public assistance in locating him.
Details from the CCTV Image
The newly released image shows Boakye wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, a dark grey zip-up top, and black trainers with distinctive white soles. The Metropolitan Police have chosen not to disclose the specific bus route where the CCTV footage was obtained, citing operational reasons.
Boakye was originally sentenced to six years and five months in prison in July 2023 for a series of violent robberies involving cryptocurrency, totaling £115,000. The circumstances surrounding his hospital visit at the time of his escape remain unclear. According to reports from The Sun, he was also scheduled for deportation to Ghana in the coming months.
Police Appeal for Information
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated, "Officers searching for a 21-year-old man who absconded from Lewisham Hospital are releasing a new image as they continue to appeal to the public for information. Daniel Boakye was in police custody in hospital when he absconded at around 3:05 PM on Sunday, February 15. Officers gave chase but could not detain him, and he left the area."
The police describe Boakye as a black man of slim build, last seen in the attire shown in the released image. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact them immediately on 999, quoting reference CAD4005/15FEB. Alternatively, individuals can call the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous.
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the Directorate of Professional Standards is aware of the incident and is conducting a review to fully understand the events that unfolded. This case highlights ongoing concerns about security protocols in custody situations and the challenges faced by law enforcement in urban manhunts.
