CNN Crew Detained and Assaulted by Israeli Soldiers in West Bank Incident

The Foreign Press Association has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as a "violent assault" by Israeli soldiers against a CNN news crew operating in the occupied West Bank earlier this week. According to the association's statement released on Saturday, the incident represents a direct attack on press freedom and journalistic safety in the region.

Details of the Violent Confrontation

The CNN team was documenting the aftermath of an assault by Israeli settlers and the establishment of an illegal outpost near the Palestinian village of Tayasir on Thursday when they were detained by Israeli military personnel. The Foreign Press Association, which represents hundreds of journalists working in Israel and Palestine, reported that soldiers aggressively targeted both the journalists and Palestinian civilians present at the scene.

"The soldiers repeatedly tried to infringe the CNN crew's right to film, ordering the crew to stop filming and threatening to confiscate the camera," the association stated in its official account of the incident. "Later, an IDF soldier approached CNN's photojournalist from behind, placed him in a chokehold, slammed him to the ground and damaged his camera."

CNN has confirmed these details in its own reporting, identifying the assaulted photojournalist as Cyril Theophilos. The network verified that the incident occurred despite the journalists clearly identifying themselves as members of the press.

Foreign Press Association's Strong Response

The media association emphasized that this was not a simple misunderstanding but rather a deliberate attack on clearly identified journalists. "This was not a misunderstanding ... It was a violent assault on clearly identified journalists and a direct attack on press freedom," the FPA declared in its statement.

The organization continued with a detailed condemnation: "The use of force was excessive and dangerous. Pointing rifles at journalists and civilians, physically assaulting a cameraman and detaining a crew are actions that cross every line. Such behaviour reflects a deeply alarming pattern of hostility toward the media and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances."

The Foreign Press Association has called for a thorough investigation into the incident and demanded accountability for those responsible.

Israeli Military Response and Apology

The Israel Defense Forces have acknowledged the incident and promised an investigation. Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, an IDF spokesperson, addressed the matter on social media platform X, stating: "The soldiers' conduct and statements in this incident do not represent the IDF, go against what is expected of IDF soldiers and will be investigated."

Shoshani added a personal apology: "I apologised privately, and I will say it again – this shouldn't have happened. Our job is to maintain law and order, among that is allowing for freedom of the press."

Pattern of Incidents Against Journalists

This marks the second serious incident involving CNN personnel in Israel this month alone. Just days earlier, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a CNN producer suffered a fractured wrist in what was described as an "unprovoked assault" by Israeli police officers. That incident occurred while journalists were documenting worshippers praying outside the walls of Jerusalem's Old City.

The West Bank has experienced continued violence despite the October 2025 ceasefire in Gaza. Since the outbreak of the current Middle East conflict, there has been a significant increase in deadly attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian communities, creating a dangerous environment for journalists attempting to report on these developments.

The Foreign Press Association's condemnation highlights growing concerns about press freedom and journalist safety in conflict zones, particularly as media organizations attempt to document human rights violations and military actions in the region.
