Germany has described reports that Russian soldiers are being trained in China as 'deeply disturbing', in a significant escalation of diplomatic tension over Beijing's role in the Ukraine war.
German government reaction
A German government spokesperson said on Friday that if confirmed, such training would represent a 'very serious matter' and a 'clear departure' from China's stated position of neutrality. 'We are deeply disturbed by these reports,' the spokesperson added, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Reports of military cooperation
The reports, first published by the German newspaper Bild, claim that Chinese military instructors have been training Russian soldiers in the use of drones and other equipment. The training is said to have taken place at a Chinese military base in the Xinjiang region. The reports could not be independently verified.
China has repeatedly denied providing military assistance to Russia since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, insisting that it is a neutral party and calling for a peaceful resolution. However, Beijing has faced growing scrutiny from Western nations over its economic and diplomatic support for Moscow.
International implications
The German reaction underscores the deepening unease in Europe over China's potential military cooperation with Russia. If confirmed, the training would mark a significant step in China-Russia military ties, which have strengthened since the war began. NATO has previously warned that China's support for Russia's defence industry is enabling Moscow to sustain its war effort.
The European Union has also expressed concern. An EU spokesperson said the bloc is 'closely monitoring' the situation and will 'not hesitate to take appropriate measures' if the reports are substantiated. The United States has similarly warned China against providing lethal aid to Russia, with President Joe Biden stating that doing so would have 'consequences'.
Chinese denial and broader context
China's foreign ministry has dismissed the reports as 'fake news', accusing Germany of trying to shift blame for the war. 'China has always been a force for peace and has never provided weapons or military training to any party in the Ukraine conflict,' a ministry spokesperson said.
The reports come as Russia continues its offensive in eastern Ukraine, with heavy fighting in the Donetsk region. Ukraine has repeatedly called for more Western military aid, including advanced air defence systems and fighter jets.
