Drug Dealer Sentenced to 21 Years for Random Fatal Attack on Mother
Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, a 24-year-old drug dealer, has been jailed for 21 years after a random and brutal attack that resulted in the death of 56-year-old mother Nila Patel. The incident occurred on June 24, following a car crash near Leicester Royal Infirmary, where Ahanonu overturned his vehicle but escaped injury.
Details of the Horrific Assault
After the crash, Ahanonu targeted Patel as she disembarked from a bus while talking on the phone with a friend. He grabbed her from behind, punched her in the face with such force that she fell to the ground, and then proceeded to stomp and kick her repeatedly. Patel, who stood at 5 feet 4 inches tall, sustained catastrophic brain damage and died two days later from her injuries.
During the attack, Ahanonu lost his sliders and was wearing only socks, highlighting the chaotic nature of the assault. A doctor at the scene described the wounds as catastrophic, underscoring the severity of the violence inflicted upon the victim.
Legal Proceedings and Defense Claims
Ahanonu denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter, citing diminished responsibility and claiming he could not remember the attack. However, jurors at Leicester Crown Court found him guilty of murder after a month-long trial. Prosecutor Mary Prior KC argued that voluntary cannabis consumption, which resulted in a THC level of 7.6mcg—well above the 2mcg limit—did not constitute a defense, as an intoxicated intent is still an intent.
In addition to the murder charge, Ahanonu pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply class B drugs, and assaulting an emergency worker by biting a female officer after his arrest. He had been released from prison on licence a year prior, following a 2023 conviction for possessing a machete and £1,000 in cash.

Nila Patel's children, Jaidan and Danika Patel, expressed profound grief, describing their mother as a loving mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and the heart of our family. They lamented the loss of future milestones, stating, She should have had the chance to grow old, to enjoy retirement, to become a grandmother and to celebrate many more milestones with her family. All of those moments have now been taken away from her, and from us.
Police Response and Community Safety
Detective Inspector Emma Matts of Leicestershire Police emphasized the random and horrific nature of the attack, noting that Ahanonu was unknown to Patel. This was the most horrific, violent and random attack by a stranger on a kind, gentle and loving woman who was simply making her way home, she said. The police released CCTV footage showing Ahanonu's dangerous driving and part of the assault, as well as efforts by hospital security to intervene.
The case has raised concerns about public safety and the consequences of drug-related violence, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and support for victims' families in such tragic circumstances.
