The Cockpit, a tiny independent micropub tucked behind a florist shop in Chislehurst, Bromley, has been crowned Greater London Pub of the Year 2026 by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). The award, announced on Monday 10 August 2026, recognises the pub's exceptional cask ale, community focus, and unique character.
A Unique Venue with Quirky Rules
Opened in 2020 at the back of Roses Florist, The Cockpit shares its space with the flower shop, creating an unconventional setting for a boozer. The pub specialises in cask ale and fine cider, but also offers local gin and Neal's Yard cheeses. To maintain a convivial atmosphere, the pub enforces a £1 fine for mobile phone usage and foul language, a policy that has become part of its charm.
Co-owner Adam Miller, who runs the pub with Paul Steadman, expressed his delight at the recognition: 'Flabbersmacked we are. Absolutely gobberghasted. Honoured to be rubbing shoulders with such a resplendent arsenal of boozers, let alone to be recognised by CAMRA as top of the pubs for Greater London this year. A sea spanning embrace to everyone that has supported us since opening five years ago, so many of you have invested a titanic amount of enthusiasm into what we love to do, it makes every day a joy.'

The winner was selected from 12 Greater London regional winners for 2026. The regional winners included:

Last year's Greater London winner was The Hope in Carshalton. CAMRA has been running its Pub of the Year awards since 1988, with marks awarded for eight criteria: quality and condition of real ale/cider/perry, promotion and knowledge of real ale, cleanliness and staff hygiene, community focus, service and welcome, style, décor and atmosphere, sympathy with CAMRA's aims, and overall impression and value.
Impact and Future Recognition
The Cockpit's win highlights the growing popularity of micropubs in London, offering a more intimate and community-focused alternative to traditional pubs. The pub's quirky rules and unique setting have made it a local favourite, and the CAMRA award is expected to draw even more visitors to the venue at 4 Royal Parade, Chislehurst, BR7 6NR.
The overall UK Pub of the Year winner will be announced later this year, with The Cockpit now in contention. Additionally, three London pubs were recently named among the most beautiful in the UK in CAMRA's 2026 Pub Design Awards, underscoring the city's vibrant pub culture.
