Sarah Sugden is in for a major shock in Emmerdale as a familiar face re-enters her life. The budding mechanic, played by Katie Hill, has endured a series of devastating events recently, and now a surprise reunion with someone from her past is set to shake things up further.
A Life Full of Drama
Growing up in a soap opera, Sarah's life has never been easy. Her journey to become a parent with husband Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant) has been fraught with challenges, primarily due to her chronic health issues, including Fanconi Anaemia, a rare genetic disorder causing bone marrow failure. Routine IVF tests revealed she had developed cervical cancer, making natural conception impossible.
Fortunately, Sarah's step-grandmother, Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), volunteered as a surrogate. However, Charity complicated matters by having a drunken encounter with Ross Barton (Michael Parr), who is the biological father of Sarah and Jacob's newborn baby, Leyla Sugden. Charity has spun a web of lies to keep this secret from Sarah, Jacob, and her husband Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb).
Current Turmoil
Unaware of the looming bombshell, Sarah has been preoccupied with helping her seriously ill grandad, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), by stealing cars to keep the farm afloat. Meanwhile, her husband Jacob is being bullied at work by the sinister Doctor Todd (Caroline Harker). In a cruel twist, Doctor Todd delivered Sarah's baby in a hospital elevator and overheard a conversation between Ross and Charity, realizing the truth about Leyla's parentage. She then attempted to blackmail Charity, leading to a sexual assault when Charity refused.
Charity is faking postnatal depression to conceal the attack, leaving Sarah feeling guilty and blaming the surrogacy for Charity's emotional pain. Sarah is at her lowest ebb.
A New Arrival
In upcoming scenes, Sarah is shocked to come face-to-face with a relative. Could this be her mother, Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb), or her father, Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher)? Both have expressed interest in returning. Alternatively, it could be a new character, Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy), who has been teased to be at the heart of upcoming drama.
Next week, Charity lashes out at and confides in a stranger who comes to her aid. Will this newcomer help Sarah navigate her troubles, or add to them?
